Hans Herzog Zweigelt 2010
- Region: Marlborough
- Tasting Notes: A powerhouse of an Austrian red! Rich and dark violet in colour with flavours of ripe berries, black pepper, spices and some earthy undertones. Aromas reminiscent of a basket of ripe stone fruits, damsons, elderberries and bitter dark chocolate. A highly complex wine with great acidity, structure and velvety smooth tannins.
We picked our 2010 Zweigelt on the 10th of April at a very low yield of less than 1kg per vine. This is Austria’s most widely planted red grape variety created in 1922 by Dr Zweigelt from a crossing of the grape varieties St. Laurent and Blaufraenkisch.
The Zweigelt spent 15 days on the skins progressing to a wild yeast fermentation before being pressed and transferred into French Barriques for a malolactic fermentation. This seductive "Austrian" has been aged on its fine lees for 13 months. No fining, no filtration.
